Year' Round Choir Activities

Chorister Choir (grades 3 through 6)  meets each Sunday evening, September through early April, at 5:30. The Choristers learn anthems and hymns, preparing to sing for 10:50 morning worship on a monthly basis.

Chorister Choir Bell Class (grades 3 through 6) is an elective open to members of the Chorister Choir. Classes meet Sunday evenings from 4:00 - 4:30 p.m. or 4:30 - 5:00 p.m., depending on grade level. The Bell Class seeks to teach fundamental ringing techniques and music reading. Children work together, each an important part of the ensemble. The Bell Class plays each year for the Advent Festival Dinner and at occasional services.

Chorister Orff Class (grades 3 through 6) is an elective open to members of the Chorister Choir. Classes meet at 4:00 - 4:30 pm or 4:30 - 5:00 pm, depending on grade level. The Orff Class is a time with instruments, musical improvisation, music games, and recreational singing, using the Orff Schulwerk method and instruments. The Orff Class plays each year for the Advent Festival Dinner and at occasional services.

Chorister Drama (grades 3 - 6) - The chorister choir prepares and presents a musical drama based on a story from the Bible. Preparation will take place during the regular chorister rehearsal time as well as the chorister drama hour (4:00 - 5:00) during the months of January and February.

Carol Choir (grades K - 2) meets each Sunday evening, September through early April at 5:00. This choir focuses on worship readiness, developing understanding of, and the skills to participate in worship with songs and hymns. The Carol Choir participates in worship on a limited basis.

Choir Recreation Both the carol and chorister choirs meet for recreation in the church gym as part of the choir program each Sunday. Carol choir recreation meets from 5:30 - 6:00; chorister choir recreation meets from 5:00 - 5:30.

Pre-School Music Time each Sunday the children (age 2 through kndergarten) gather in the music room of the Drane Center at 9:30 before they go to their Sunday school classes. This is a time for fellowship, group singing, and playing instruments.

Chorister Camp is a First Presbyterian Church summer music camp for children in rising grades 3 through 7. This camp, held each year for three days in early summer, has a wonderful 20-plus year tradition of inspiring and nurturing the children of our church through Bible study, music and fellowship.

Making music is a central aspect of the camp. We make music joining our voices in singing, and sharing our instrumental talents. We create music through Orff-Schulwerk. Camp activities also include handbells, recorders, creative movement, music games, Bible Study, crafts, swimming, and lots of opportunities for fellowship with our church friends.

We also have the opportunity of fellowship as we study the Bible, share our creative talents in crafts, cool down in the pool, and play games together. But the best thing about Chorister Camp is that we get to know our church friends in an informal setting as we work together in the camp setting! All children are encouraged to participate. We want to give them an opportunity to develop God's gift of music with us. Ask about Chorister Camp in June at Briarwood Retreat Center in Argyle, Texas.

Contact Mary Jane Cooper at ext. 205 for more information about children's music.

Youth

Youth Choir (grades 7–12)

The youth choir is open to all youth in grades 7-12 regardless of musical training or experience. The choir rehearses each Sunday of the academic year from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and sings in the 10:50 a.m. worship service at least once per month. In addition to regular worship leadership, the youth choir enjoys two trips each year: a fall weekend trip and a more extensive trip in the early summer, often in conjunction with a service mission or major conference participation. We have recently been to Seattle, WA, Montreat, NC, and Destin, FL.

Instrumental Exploration for Youth (Sundays from 3:30-4:15 p.m.)

Youth regularly participate in instrumental ensembles including the brass ensemble, percussion ensembles and opportunities to play in special services. Every effort is made to include youth in a full range of musical experiences to employ their developing skills and interests in the service of God.

Contact Ken Cooper at ext. 206 or Hilary Donaldson at ext. 204 for more information about youth music.
