First Presbyterian Church Capital Campaign 2008

Our church is beginning an adventure that will determine our future. A successful capital stewardship campaign will enable our church to expand its ministry and better fulfill its mission. Members of the church have many ways they can support the capital campaign. One of the ways is through prayer. You may choose to pray for the capital campaign’s leadership or for church members as they make individual decisions about their role in the campaign. The campaign’s journey lasts only a few months, but it possesses the potential to change our lives and our church forever. Your participation through prayer is critical to that change.

Join us for a celebration on Sunday, October 26!

Please note that there will be only ONE worship service on Sunday, October 26, at 10:50, in honor of Commitment Sunday. Immediately following the service, there will be an all-church celebration in the parking lot in front of the Drane Building. Join our church family for delicious boxed lunches, fabulous entertainment by the Knuckleheads, and fun activities for kids including a bubble bounce, hula hoops, an open playground, and animal balloons. We encourage everyone to attend and bring your pledge cards!

The driveway into the parking lot on the west side of the church will be closed off after worship begins, so the only exit will be the one that empties onto Young Street to provide a safe, open area for our festivities. Our goal for the capital campaign is much larger than the dollars needed to fund the building improvements--we are also developing fellowship with one another and strengthening our sense of community.

How can I donate stock to the campaign?

Many people own stocks that are worth significantly more than the original purchase price, maybe not as much more as a month ago, but more none the less. This is good news. The bad news is that if these stocks are sold, a significant portion of the gain would be lost to taxation. Gifts of appreciated assets—typically investment securities or real estate—can be very advantageous to both the donor and the church. By transferring ownership of the asset to the church, the donor avoids capital gains taxes on the sale of the asset. In addition, the donor receives an income tax charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset. That, in effect, makes these gifts less costly to make.
Though it is important to invest your giving to further the mission of our ministry, it is also important to show financial wisdom in doing so. Consider the tax implications of making a gift to the church. Before making a commitment of this type, please consult your CPA, tax attorney, or other financial adviser.

Open Heart. Open Arms.

God blesses welcoming hearts.
God blessed the widow who welcomed Elijah, providing her unending food and bringing her son back from death.
God blessed Mary and Joseph, who trusted God’s vision and welcomed a child that changed the world.

God has blessed First Presbyterian Church as we extended our embrace to…
    …Leontine Bailey’s family in 1902, leading to Presbyterian Children’s Home & Services,
…ill and injured children, creating a clinic in 1921 that is part of Children’s Hospital today,
…World War II servicemen, who called our gymnasium “home” while stationed in Dallas,
…the city’s hungry, starting the Stewpot in 1975 and now serving 2,000 meals a day,
…the children of City Park, beginning our still thriving Saturday School ministry in 1977.

God blesses welcoming hearts.

May God bless us as we work to even better receive those God brings our way.

May God bless our church family as we make our building more inviting by…
    …creating a new “front door,”
…growing a beautiful garden by the chapel,
            …removing barriers to accessibility,
…reinventing our youth area to welcome the next generation,
…opening spaces to meet and greet one another in loving fellowship.

May God bless our community, as we make this neighborhood a more welcoming place to live, learn, serve, and worship, investing in this corner of the city and inviting others to join us here.

Most of all, may God bless our minds and hearts, as we open ourselves to God’s guidance, rejecting fear and familiarity to embrace faith that God has abundantly far more than we can ask or imagine in store for Dallas’ First Presbyterian Church.

May God bless us with an Open Heart. Open Arms.
