Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the Nursery and Preschool Children on Sunday mornings?
The Nursery and Preschool Classrooms are located in the Drane Center, a separate building just west of the main building, adjacent to the uncovered parking lot.  You can enter through their main doors and sign in.  Or you can enter through the covered walkway on the second floor by the Elementary Children’s Wing.

How will you contact me if my nursery or preschool age child needs me?

When you drop your child off, you’ll receive a wireless pager to carry with you.  If your child becomes sick or inconsolable, we will “buzz” you so that you can return to the Drane Center to care for your child.  If you would like to hear the remaining portion of the worship service, you can take your child to the Parlor to hear a live audio feed.

Where are the Elementary Children on Sunday mornings?

The Kindergarten Classroom is in the Drane Center, a separate building just west of the main building, adjacent to the uncovered parking lot,  on the Second Floor. You can enter through the main doors and sign in. Or you can enter through the covered walkway on the second floor by the Elementary Children’s Wing.

The 1st – 5th Graders meet each Sunday beginning in the Holy Word Studios on the Second Floor in Children’s Wing and then go to their particular rotation classroom for the day.

The 6th Graders meet in a classroom on the Second Floor in the Children’s Wing.

Will my child have the same teacher each week?
Yes.  Children often develop long lasting relationships with their teachers. Each classroom has at least two teachers.  And those children in 1st – 5th grade have a Shepherd teacher who travels with them to each classroom.  During the summer months assigned substitute teachers provide a break so that teachers can seek enrichment and re-charge their batteries.

How do you keep parents involved in their child’s experience at church?
Parents of young children in the Drane center will be handed a flyer or pamphlet when you pick up your child. Older children will have their materials. These materials are part of the curriculum and can be used to review what your child learned during the class.  In addition, the craft project provides a great way to engage your child.

Children’s Ministry sends out mailings about upcoming events including a newsletter several times a year.  Information is also updated on the website calendar and in the weekly church newspaper.  Families are also encouraged to sign up for a special yahoo.com called FPCkids where reminders are sent.

How do children participate in Worship?
All children are invited to participate in worship.  Both in the Chapel and Sanctuary, children will find Worship bags with a children’s activity sheet, crayons and bookmarks. Children also regularly participate in worship when choirs sing and for special occasions.

How do you keep my child safe?
First Presbyterian Church has a child protection policy. All paid nursery staff and all volunteer teachers or event sponsors complete a Information Form and have a national background check completed.  They also receive training.  Classrooms have two teachers for safety and supervision.

How can I volunteer? First Presbyterian Church is very fortunate to have many outstanding and committed teachers and volunteers. If you are interested, the children’s ministry would like to visit with you. For more information, contact Kathy Price.
